NOFIRNO withstands two-hours Jet Fire test
An uncontrolled discharge of combustible gas under pressure poses a serious fire hazard in areas such as petrochemical plants, offshore petroleum rigs and other environments that are sensitive to extreme fires. If high-pressure flammable gas, pressure liquefied gas or flashing liquid fuels are emitted at high velocity and ignited, the result will be a jet fire. Withstanding these jet fires is most demanding for a sealing system. BEELE Engineering’s NOFIRNO sealing system for multi-cable and pipe transits has successfully completed a jet fire test, in accordance with ISO 22899-1:2007 and ISO/CD 22899-2 for two hours at Health & Safety Laboratory at Buxton in England. The jet fire test was recorded on DVD; copies of the DVD can be ordered via BEELE Engineering.

RISE/ULTRA for chilled water lines
The fire safe sealing of insulated copper pipes for chilled water lines on board of ships and offshore installations is quite difficult. Traditionally the insulation has to be interrupted in order the achieve an optimum fire safety, resulting in extra installation time. With RISE/ULTRA Beele Engineering now offers a cost-effective solution. The heart of this system is the RISE/ULTRA crusher; a rubber sleeve that is put around the insulated copper pipe. In the case of fire the RISE/ULTRA expands and consequently squeezes the insulation material. Thus, the conduit opening carrying the pipe is completely closed and the fire is prevented from spreading any further. In fact this is quite a cost saver because without interruption of the insulation there is no need for a lot of extra's at both sides of the penetrations. For detailed information about RISE/ULTRA, please contact us.

RIACNOF - the best of all worlds!
With RIACNOF BEELE Engineering has introduced a new fire-safe sealing system for cable penetrations. The new system combines the best of all worlds: RISE, ACTIFOAM and NOFIRNO. Approved for use in the shipbuilding industry. The RIACNOF-system is non-toxic and absolutely halogen-free.
RIACNOF enables short installation times. The sealing is realized by packing the cables with RISE sleeves. The remaining space in the penetration opening is filled with pre-slit sheets and strips of the fire safe and thermal insulating ACTIFOAM foam rubber. The use of ACTIFOAM as filler material reduces the use of sealant and minimises the heat transfer through the penetration. Due to the fact that the NOFIRNO sealant is non-reactive, the sealant will remain stable at high thermal loads. What´s more, the NOFIRNO sealant will not be consumed by the fire due to the protective layer and char formed. This means that the sealant stays in place.

ULEPSI tank supports for triple-hulled carrier
The 11,000 dwt sulphur/bitumen tanker FS Charlotte is one of the few -if not the only- triple-hulled tankers in existence. Designed by Istanbul based Delta Marine Co and built by Yardimci Shipyards, FS Charlotte can trade two different cargoes thanks to its entirely seperated cargo systems. As well as having a double hull, FS Charlotte also has a void space to isolate the cargo from ballast tanks. In this way it is possible to carry cargo without any heating for at least seven days. The cargo tanks are fully independent of the hull structure, and mounted on ULEPSI tank supports of BEELE Engineering to allow expansion of the cargo at high temperatures and so FS Charlotte is, effectively, a triple-hull ship. The purpose of the ULEPSI tank support system is to reduce the temperature from around 200 oC to a reasonable level. Further requirements to be met are compressive strength to absorb the weight of the cargo tanks in addition to an optimised coefficient of friction of the various system components.

RISWAT does the job
Beele's RISWAT sealing system was used for the sealing of a large water pipe of Vienna's Water Services. The existing pipe broke and had to be replaced by a new one. The new concrete pipe is connected to a local pump station in an area close to the Donau river that floods frequently. Therefore the penetration opening for the concrete pipe had to be sealed. Because the ducted pipe was not located centrally in the conduit opening, RISWAT was the only system that could do the job. RISWAT is suitable for the sealing of both new and existing cable and pipe transits. This therefore simplifies repairs to existing cable/pipe entries that may have developed a leak.

NOFIRNO for Dubrovnik airport
As part of the renovation of the passenger terminal of Airport Dubrovnik, Beele Engineering has received an order for the NOFIRNO boards. The mineral wool boards will be used for the fire safe ducting of cables. For separating the cables the NOFIRNO boards are combined with the NOFIRNO insert sleeves. The sleeves are split lenthwise and can be fitted easily around the cables. The NOFIRNO board is sealed all around with NOFIRNO sealant to obtain optimum tightness.
NOFIRNO mineral boards offer a very economic solution for the sealing of larger open spaces in conduit openings. The boards are coated with a layer of NOFIRNO. In case of fire the NOFIRNO coating will form a ceramic protective shield at the exposed side. It prevents moisture from escaping from the inside of the mineral wool board so that no shrinkage will occur during fire exposure. NOFIRNO boards have been successfully tested during a 90 min fire test according to the European standard EN 1366-3:2004 (determination of the fire resistance of a cable penetration through an aerated concrete wall).

NEW NOFIRNO SEALANT
The range of sealants has been extended with the NOFIRNO sealant. This fire-resistant sealant is based on a single component silicone compound. Besides fire-resistant the NOFIRNO sealant is also water-repellent and UV and ozone resistant. Fire tests have shown that the sealant is able to withstand fire and thermal loads without showing any dramatic colour change or carbonization at the unexposed side. At the exposed side the sealant will not be consumed by the fire due to the protective layer and char formed. This means that the sealant stays in place there.
NOFIRNO sealant is halogen free, does not harden during service life, has outstanding weathering properties, does not shrink during fire exposure, has an oxygen index of 45% (>30% is flame retardant) and a low smoke index. NOFIRNO® sealant can be used in a very wide temperature range. The sealant is supplied in cartridges containing 310 ml. NOFIRNO has a balanced viscosity and can be applied above head. After applying the sealant, it can be smoothed by means of a wet cloth or by hand.

RISWAT ASSURES GAS TIGHT SEALING OF PIPE PENETRATION
It is self-evident that gas leakages in houses must be prevented under all circumstances. The most simple, effective and installation friendly way to realize this, is the use of the SLIPSIL sealing plugs. However, in some cases the ducted pipes are not located centrally in the conduit opening.
This also was the case in Austria; several systems where used to seal the conduit opening but all failed. Finally, the gas and water tight RISWAT system offered the perfect solution. The system can be used for the gas and water tight sealing of both cable and pipe transits in walls and platforms in buildings, and of decks and bulkheads on board ships. The basic elements of the RISWAT system are thermoplastic sleeves and inserts (coloured blue) and DRIFIL compound.

RISE EXTENSION FRAME
In view of its simplicity and the resultant time savings achieved during installation, more and more installers are changing over to the RISE system for the firesafe sealing of cable conduits. The RISE extension frame offers the possibility of upgrading existing conventional conduit systems in a simple way. The frame can be used for existing conduits; its installation can be performed without the need to remove existing cables. Application of the extension frame yields not only all the convenience of the RISE system but it also improves the fire resistance of the conduit while at the same time making it an easy matter to remove or add cables at a later date. Moreover the RISE extension frame doubles the ducting capacity by comparison with conventional systems. For maritime applications, there is the added advantage that use of the extension frame makes extra insulation unnecessary.
RISE extender frames have been used extensively to replace systems which caused leakages at critical points in offshore installations. The most significant case being the listing of BP´s Thunderhorse following the Hurricane Dennis in July 2005. Part of the problems causing the listing of the platform where leaking conduits in the columns. All revised conduits have been inspected and RISE has now been used for this purpose in the regular version on the Atlantia I-Hub semi-submersible. Pressure testing has proven that RISE can hold pressures up to 4 bar without leaking.

SUCCESSFUL PRESSURE TEST
In the laboratory of the R&D center of BEELE Engineering under survey of TNO Quality Services BV, Eindhoven (the Netherlands) a pressure test on A RISE multi cable sealing system applied in an extension frame installed over an existing block type frame. A complicating factor was that for the project involved the test had to be carried out leaving a leaking block type system in place. The reason for this is that the project leader did not want to disassemble the block type system with a view on possible damage of the cables. In this way the extender frame should be fiited at the outside of the existing frame. Since welding, even spot welding was not allowed the two parts of the extender frame had to be bolted on.
Approval was obtained from Bureau Veritas to install the RISE system on top or in front of the existing block system whereby 40 mm FIWA sealant was applied at one side of the penetration instead of 20 mm at both sides (impossible due to the existing block system). By doing this the pressure load would occur at the inside of the extender frame and for gas tight areas the fear was that leakage could occur between the block frame and the extension frame and betwwen the flanges of the extension frame. The test showed no leakages at these spots at a pressure of 1 bar.
Note: the standard application of RISE extender systems is approved for even higher pressures.

NEW HEATHROW TERMINAL LOOKS TO RISE FOR CABLE DUCTS
Construction at the new Terminal at Heathrow, Terminal 5 is well under way, with completion due in March 2008. T5 will consist of the main terminal building – which is big enough to accommodate 50 football pitches – 2 satellite buildings, 60 aircraft stands, a new air traffic control tower, a 4000 space multi storey car park, along with all associated infrastructure works, including extensions to the London Underground. One of the early stages of the project was to install the power systems for the site, consisting of a massive sub-station and miles of cabling running through part of the total of 13.5km of tunnelling. In order to prevent water and gas ingress and also to offer fire protection in certain areas, the RISE system was chosen to seal cable entries into the sub station and through building entries into the Terminal itself. Much of this work was carried out by both Scottish and Southern Energy and Laing O’Rourke. Both chose RISE for its simplicity and speed of installation, as well as its proven long term high sealing performance in the most arduous of environments.

SUCCESSFUL A-0 FIRE TEST WITH RISE/NOFIRNO
Most recently a A-0 fire test was carried out succesfully on a 408 mm OD steel pipe in a coaming 500 x 500 mm. The tested conduit length was 250 mm, showing that even these large size pipes and large size penetration can be sealed effectively. The RISE/NOFIRNO was used as sealing system. RISE/NOFIRNO is composed of RISE filler sleeves and NOFIRNO sealant; a combination that is especially suited for difficult A-0 divisions.
The recent fire test followed an earlier test on a A-0 pipe penetration. This test was carried out succesfully on steel pipes 114 mm OD. Both sleeve lengths of 250 and 350 mm passed the fire test. A DNV-certificate has been obtained. Any A-0 pipe penetrations on, for example, offshore platforms can now be effectively sealed with the RISE/NOFIRNO sealing system.

ECONOMIC MATERIAL MANAGEMENT
On request of the market an A-60 fire test was carried out on RISE GRP pipe penetrations without wraps, a coaming length of 200 mm and no insulation at the exposed side. The test was witnessed by Bureau Veritas and very successful. A modification of the MED certificate 10035 is expected soon so that steel, copper/CuNi and GRP pipes can be covered with one RISE configuration. Only filler sleeves, no wraps and insulation only around the ducted pipe at the unexposed side of the bulkhead and the exposed side of the deck. This means that for these penetrations the same conduit length can be used as for cable penetrations. This will contribute to more economic material management at site.

Total had built a new switch and control room on the site, which handles up to 10.5 million tonnes of oil each year, and required seals on the cable entries that offered blast protection, provided a gas and fire tight seal, with the control room being situated within a hazardous area. The site had previously used block systems to seal cable entries, and the Southern Electrical Contracting personnel, who carried out the work on site, said both ACTIFOAM and RISE were far better and quicker to install than block systems.

ARMAFLEX INSULATED COPPER PIPES
The recent fire test with Armaflex insulated copper pipes sealed with RISE (as used for plastic pipes - squeezing the Armaflex) has been completed successfully. Updates of the existing certificates by Bureau Veritas, Det Norske Veritas and Germanischer Lloyd´s are expected soon. This configuration is quite a cost saver: the insulation won´t be interrupted and therefore a lot of extra's at both sides of the penetrations are avoided. The same test will be carried out soon for larger insulated steel pipes. This enables companies to cover for example all chilled water lines with this solution.
Most recently a fire test was carried out with multi-plastic penetrations (pipes up to 110 mm) in a configuration as tight as possible. This test was successful and the results have been meanwhile listed in the update of our EC certificate 10710/B1EC. Besides the penetration size for plastic penetrations has been enlarged.

MAJOR ORDER FOR RISWAT SEALS AT GAS RECEIVING STATION ON WORLD’S LONGEST SUBSEA PIPELINE
This autumn saw the official opening of the world’s largest subsea pipeline, which has the capacity to transport approximately 20% of the UK’s gas requirements. The first volume of gas was piped ashore on 1 October 2006 at Easington (on the north-east coast of England), and in due course supplies through the pipeline will total 20 billion cubic metres a year. The gas is produced at a depth of 900 metres in the Ormen Lange field, which lies 120 kilometres to the north-west offshore the Norwegian coast; Ormen Lange ranks as the largest gas field on the Norwegian continental shelf. A new large-scale gas receiving station was constructed at Easington to provide the landfall site for the gas supplied. The RISWAT system by Beele Engineering was chosen to provide gas and water tight seals for all the cable conduits in the gas receiving station.
DYNATITE: NEW SEALING SYSTEM CAPABLE OF WITHSTANDING SHOCK PRESSURE LOADS
Beele Engineering has developed a new technology for the sealing of cable and pipe penetrations exposed to shock pressure loads. This DYNATITE (dynamic tightness) technology not only assures a very high compressive strength but also retains this property for a very long period.
The DYNATITE system has been specifically designed for application in columns of offshore oil rigs, where penetrations may be subjected to sudden extreme pressure loads. The system is also suitable for use in a wide range of other environments where penetrations may be suddenly exposed to extreme conditions. These include for example partitions between hazardous and non-hazardous areas, blast walls, explosion-proof areas, and regions with elevated hurricane and tsunami risks.
Beele Engineering will be exhibiting at the international maritime trade fair Maritime Vietnam to be held from 6 through 9 November in Ho Chi Mink City (Vietnam). In addition to the well-known RISE system, Beele’s corporate booth will include presentations on the new SLIPSIL plug and DYNATITE technology.
BEELE ENGINEERING STARTS UP NEW PRODUCTION FACILITY
With the start-up of a new facility for the production of fire resistant and gas and water tight sealing systems, Beele Engineering BV at Aalten has officially opened NOFIRNO Plaza. NOFIRNO is a high performance rubber developed by Beele Engineering, which is used among other things for the production of fire resistant plugs, compounds and coatings.
Beele Engineering will be exhibiting at the SMM international maritime trade fair to be held from 26 through 29 September in Hamburg (Germany). In addition to the well-known RISE system, Beele’s corporate booth (Hall 12, OG.011) will include presentations on the new SLIPSIL plug and DYNATITE technology.
RISE SYSTEM ASSURES FIRE SAFETY ON BOARD OF P50 FPSO
To be able to comply with the strict requirements governing fire safety, the RISE system by Beele Engineering was selected for the firesafe sealing of all cable and pipe penetration openings on board the FPSO P50 of Petrobras. This system eliminates the risk of potential fire breakthrough via the penetration openings. The Beele Engineering system was subjected to the severest possible testing world-wide, while for the fire tests the harshest possible test conditions were chosen that also mirror reality as closely as possible.
The RISE system was supplied in conjunction with a complete training programme for the installation personnel on board of the FPSO.
BEELE ENGINEERING GAINS MAJOR ORDER FOR WORLD’S LARGEST CHEMICAL CARRIERS
Beele Engineering has received an order to supply its fire resistant RISE system for the world’s largest chemical carriers. Recently the launch took place of the first of four vessels commissioned by Odfjell (Bergen, Norway) and currently under construction at the Polish shipyard Stocznia Szczecinska Nowa.
NEW SLIPSIL SEALING PLUG COUPLES EASE OF INSTALLATION WITH OPTIMIZED FIRE SAFETY
Beele Engineering has launched a new type of sealing plug under the trade name SLIPSIL. This new plug is designed to provide fire safe and gas and water tight seals for transits carrying single or multiple plastic or metal pipes. Typical areas of application of the SLIPSIL plug are the construction industry, shipbuilding and the offshore sector, the oil refining and (petro)chemicals industry, and the water and utilities industry.
Beele Engineering B.V. has introduced a new website for its range of sealing plugs. The new website www.csdplugs.com presents a full overview of the product range and the various applications. Besides the familiar CSD sealing plug, visitors to the site will also find extensive information on special sealing solutions, such as the LEAXEAL grip seal, the CSD-SQ multi-transit plug and the BEESEAL system.
NEW WEBSITE FOR RISWAT GAS AND WATER TIGHT CABLE AND PIPE TRANSITS
Beele Engineering BV has opened a new website for the RISWAT gas and water tight sealing system. The system is used for the gas and water tight sealing of both cable and pipe transits in walls and platforms in buildings, and of decks and bulkheads on board ships.
Visitors to www.riswat.com will find a complete overview of the functionality and applications of RISWAT. The site also presents a short guide to the installation of the system.
BEELE ENGINEERING TO BUILD NEW PRODUCTION PLANT FOR RISE SYSTEM AND CSD SEALING PLUGS
Beele Engineering BV is to build a new production plant in order to meet the growing demand for the fire resistant RISE sealing system and CSD sealing plugs.
The new plant will be constructed on a plot measuring about 7,000 m2; the first phase consists of a new building covering some 2000 m2. In the second phase, production facilities will be added for the manufacture of Actifoam fire resistant and thermally insulating foam rubber. The new premises will be located on the Vierde Broekdijk in Aalten, adjoining the Beele Research and Training Centre for Fire and Evacuation Safety.
